Florida Fun

Last week Mom and I went to Florida for a few days to visit my aunt and uncle. The weather was still a bit chilly but we still had fun soaking up the sun.

Al took me out on his boat into the intercoastal waters. My goal was to see a manatee but unfortunately we never spotted one. However, we did see some dolphins and one came right up to the boat and was playing in our wake for a few minutes.

Al tinkering with his boat.

The red tide is high right now and I've seen quite a few news reports that Florida has had a record number of manatee deaths this year. The red tide is an algae and when they eat it the toxin in the algae paralyzes them and they are unable to keep themselves afloat to breathe.

We stopped at this little sea side restaurant for some drinks and snacks.

Al and Nancy's 'tinaminium'...it's very cute and beachy inside! I'm definitely looking forward to retirement :)....however, I realize that's probably not going to be possible for my generation.

Saturday we drove down to Venice to do some shopping and then spent the afternoon on the beach. It was a bit windy and chilly on the beach. Their area of Florida is the prime area for shelling and finding sharks teeth. I found about 20 sharks teeth in just the short time we spent on the beach.

I figured I was finding teeth that had recently fallen out. Turns out....not so much! The teeth are fossilized and are usually black or tan in color. They fall out and sink to the bottom of the ocean where they fossilize and so the teeth you are finding are at least 10,000 years old! Pretty cool!

Definitely looking forward to going back!

Viva Las Vegas!

Last week we made our annual pilgrimage to Las Vegas for the Western Veterinary Conference. As always, we had a fabulous time. This year about 8 of our vet school classmates were also in attendance. We hadn't really planned on going together...most of us haven't seen each other since graduation....9 years ago.

Heidi, Me, Anton, Nathan, Portia, and Nick

We stayed out a 'titch' too late our first night catching up and generally just having fun! :) We needed a little extra of this the next morning......

We had good food and went and saw the Cirque du Soleil show Ka at the MGM. It was very good and Nathan commented it is now one of his favorites.

Hanging in NYNY after Ka.....

We checked out the Mandalay Bay shark reef before we left for the airport.

Once again I wasn't left much at the end of the trip :( Penny slots and I just don't seem to get a long!

When I Grow Up....

When I grow up, I really want to be a pet photographer.

I have been inspired by some really cute canvases that have been recently put up at the EC. A local photographer in the area 'donated' some canvases of pets at work. They are really cute and inspired me to take even MORE pics of my favorite pooches. You can never have too many photos of cute scottie dogs.

Lately, Ruby has been my muse....you can't really pose her....I think she hates that even more than wearing clothes...but if you just let her be and be patient-things go much better.

Wrigley is always a good poser but always tries to get closer to me when I'm behind the lens. He's just so curious about what I'm doing!

I love my camera...but I've been frustrated with my focus. Just when I think I've got my 'money' shot- I discover the one area I thought I had focused isn't crisp. I don't know if it is the camera operator, my camera, or my lens.....so I will keep pressing on. Thank God for the digital age! I can shoot 700 photos to get 1 or 2 good shots!

Goals for 2013....improve my focus and work more with photo shop!

Enjoy!

Liberty Bowl/ New Year's

After celebrating Christmas with the fam, we got up the next morning prepared to drive to Memphis, TN to cheer on ISU in the Liberty Bowl. Mom was still not feeling well so she decided to stay home. Dad, Nathan, and I all were really worried we were going to come down with the flu on our quick trip....luckily we all stayed healthy!

Nathan proudly displaying his freak flag....

It took about 8.5 hrs to drive to Memphis from Washington....we headed out for BBQ at Central BBQ once we arrived into town. We met my sorority sister Amy and her hubby David....we headed down to Beale Street to take in the night life.

The game was played New Year's Eve day....it was cold (30's) and projected to rain...we tailgated before the game with friends....and ate more BBQ....

ISU played Tulsa...we had played them once before at the beginning of the season and we had won. Ready to cheer on the Cyclones!

ISU had a very big following at the game...over 20,000 ISU fans made the trip to Memphis. It was a sea of cardinal and gold....

It did start lightly raining during the second quarter. We were prepared with ponchos!

ISU came out strong in the first quarter but soon petered out....we played horribly the rest of the game and ended up losing :(

We planned ahead and had bought tickets to the Peabody Hotel's NYE celebration. They had two different bands playing as well as a DJ. There was free champagne and a balloon drop at midnight. We had a fantastic time!

Happy New Year!

Christmas 2012

We celebrated Christmas with my side of the family the weekend after Christmas. Gma Jean had been sick the with the stomach flu and then Mom fell to the same symptoms just a few days later...so we had a pretty low key gathering.

Gma Jean (92) was thrilled with her Magic Mike movie and People mag featuring Channing Tatum.

Nathan was over joyed with his scottie mug....compliments of Gma :)

Mom with her annual Chanel 5....

Mom compiled all of Adam and Teresa's wedding photos into a scrap book....she and the girls enjoyed looking through it....

Adam and some new running shoes....

Dad always gets wine.....
